Why would one need a featureless roadmap? Isn’t knowing what to be shipped next the whole point of having roadmaps?

It might sound absurd, but featureless roadmapping is a valuable method not to lose track of your strategy.

Your roadmap should not be a delivery plan or a list full of to-dos (or to-ships). Releasing a feature is exciting, but it’s not uncommon for teams to be too occupied with shiny new things, or the whats, that the whys are forgotten over time.

He is the co-author of three books in the area of product management and design as well as adjunct faculty at Madrid's IE University and Baltimore's Maryland Institute College of Art.
